- Title
THE CONTESTABILITY OF AIRLINE MARKETS DURING THE TRANSITION TO DEREGULATION.
- Authors
BAILEY, ELIZABETH E.; PANZAR, JOHN C.
- Abstract
The article discusses the competition in the U.S. airline industry during its deregulation. It examines the theory of contestable markets and its applicability in the city-pair airline markets. It claims that the certainty that large trunk airline systems could have no substantial unit cost advantage over the smaller trunk systems make it unnecessary to deregulate the sector. The contrasting opinions of George Stigler and Harold Demetz on the nature of entry barriers in the airline sector are also cited.
