- Abstract
The article focuses on the use of environmental indicators in supporting the development of agricultural policy in Canada. Canada's agricultural industry makes an important contribution to the nation's social, economic and ecological welfare, thus the sustainable development of this sector is important to all Canadians. With respect to the environment, the Agricultural Policy Framework contains several innovative elements, including a requirement, that Canada-wide, measurable goals and targets be specified, and that indicators be identified to monitor and report progress toward these goals. Canada's agricultural industry is a key contributor to the country's overall welfare. With regard to the environment, a number of key studies produced over the past decade suggest that agriculture contributes to both beneficial as well as adverse environmental outcomes.
