- Abstract
This article focuses on the controversy in mid-seventeenth-century England over the peopling of ancient America. Two years after the founding of the Puritan commonwealth in England, Hamon l'Estrange wrote a rejoinder to a book of Thomas Thorowgood on the possibility that the Native Americans originated from the ten lost tribes of Israel, who had disappeared from biblical history in the eight century BCE.
