The article presents the author's views on priest Martin Luther’s early understanding of the righteousness of faith. Topics discussed include influence of Augustine’s "De Trinitate" and Lombard’s "Sentences" on earliest writings of Luther; Luther’s monastic context showing his scholarly study of God’s righteousness; and Luther’s active engagement with late medieval materials.
