- Abstract
However, in cases where MNA is not the only remedy implemented for groundwater, regulatory guidance, and the traditional linear project planning process (Figure 1), result in the processes of active groundwater remediation and MNA being evaluated separately over distinct periods. Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA), Monitored Natural Recovery (MNR), and Natural Source Zone Depletion (NSZD) are natural remedies for groundwater, sediments, and nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPL), respectively. In accordance with U.S. EPA's directives (U.S. EPA [35], [25]), the first line of evidence for MNA as an effective remedy is demonstration of a stable to decreasing area and/or mass of contaminants in groundwater over time after all engineered remedies have been completed. While MNA is a natural remedy for groundwater, MNR is a natural remedy for sediment.
