- Abstract
The article cites a study which reports the risk of hysterectomy quadruples after women undergo sterilization. According to the study women who are sterilized are more than four limes as likely as non-sterilized women whose husbands undergo vasectomy to have a hysterectomy within five years after the procedure. The study was conducted in nine cities across the U.S. The study included 7,174 women who underwent tubal sterilization between 1978 and 1986. To examine the hysterectomy risk in this group relative to that among other women who had ended childbearing and were using a permanent form of contraception, the researchers selected a comparison group of 544 women whose husbands had a vasectomy between 1985 arid 1987. The researchers remark that biological factors, such as menstrual changes, are not likely to be responsible for the increased risk of hysterectomy associated with sterilization. They speculate that women who choose sterilization may be more likely than other women to undergo surgery, and that sterilized women with gynecologic disorders may be more likely than non-sterilized women to perceive themselves as candidates for hysterectomy.
