- Abstract
This article presents information on urban areas and its growth. The United Nations project that as a result of population growth rates in cities and increasing migration from rural areas, by 2025 fully 61% of the world's people-84% of those in developed nations and 57% of those in developing countries-will be urban. UN data also indicate that in 1994, the only urban area containing more than 18 mil- lion people was Tokyo (with 26.5 million); by 2015, in contrast, 10 urban areas are expected to have populations of more than 18 million.
