- Authors
Sprayregen, James H. M.; Kieselstein, Marc; Seligman, David R.
- Abstract
This article discusses United Airlines Inc.'s Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and the restructuring changes which occurred during the bankruptcy period. A comprehensive bankruptcy reorganization was aimed at cost reductions, minimizing operational rigidities such as medical costs and retired employees' pensions, collectively-bargained constraints on flexibility, municipal bond obligations, and aircraft debt. The positives which can result from filing for bankruptcy are addressed. Companies must be flexible, negotiate settlements and reorganize with plans for improved performance.
