- Abstract
The article discusses the need to preserve the distinctions of the U.S. Civil War's contribution to the history of the American Indians in the 19th century. Topics include the career of Godard Bailey in the U.S. federal service and his vision of Indian Country, the efforts of African Americans to secure freedom and the federal government's difficulties in rebuilding national structures of political authority, and the history of the U.S. Reconstruction.
