- Abstract
This article deals with the thesis formulated, among others, by Andreas Reckwitz that the German social structure is increasingly characterized by a spatial polarization. Based on the German Mikrozensus, the article empirically examines changes in the socioeconomic composition of metropolitan and small-town/rural locations and, second, changes in the residential locations of different socioeconomic classes between 1996 and 2018. Empirically, the hypothesis that the "new" postindustrial middle class is increasingly concentrated in metropolitan areas while the "old" middle class and precarious classes are increasingly left behind in small towns and rural areas is not confirmed. However, it is found that spatial disparities are partially increasing.
