- Abstract
This article presents a qualitative approach used in a Ph.D. study in business management. The approach integrates grounded theory and analysis of critical periods as strategy of theorization from process data. In the research, the process data analyzed were those related to the phenomenon under study: the formation and the development of the shared vision (shared mental image of a desired future condition to realize) in management teams of small and medium enterprises (SME). Three characteristics suggest the innovative character and the potential of contribution to future studies of the approach that we developed: (1) the unusual combination of grounded theory and analysis of critical periods; (2) the ways developed to apply both; and (3) the emphasis on the creation of displays and graphical representations that facilitate the understanding of the research and promote the potential of replication of methods. Different possible contributions of the methods are pointed at the end of this article.
