- Abstract
The article focuses on the history of the emergence of detective fiction in France. The first known French detective novel was the "Monsieur Lecoq" written by Emile Gaboriau in 1868. Naturalism and symbolism are depicted in the literary novel. In the early 20th century, two French detective novelists became popular, namely Gaston Leroux and Maurice Leblanc. Georges Simenon and Léo Malet are considered as the two great writers of detective fiction during the 1930s.
