- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare vaccination coverage between rural and urban areas of Zambia. This was a cross sectional survey conducted in all 10 provinces in Zambia for the evaluation of Measles-Rubella (MR) coverage that was achieved during the countrywide under 15 years MR campaign. The survey was carried out simultaneously in every province in the country. A two-stage random sampling method was used to select clusters and households. All target children and mothers in households were requested to participate in the survey. A total of 6,490 children participated in the campaign. Altogether, 95.0% (94.8% rural and 95.5% in urban areas) of the children were vaccinated. After adjusting for possible confounding factors (child's age, paternal education, occupation, religion, number of members in a household, child's sex and province), children in rural areas were 19% (AOR = 1.19, 95% CI [1.19, 1.20]) more likely to be vaccinated compared to children in urban areas. In order to ensure equity in vaccination coverage between rural and urban areas, further studies should be conducted to elucidate factors that may be contributing to such inequalities.
