- Authors
Moukarzel, Richard
- Abstract
This article explores the relationship between early German Romanticism and Wagnerian aesthetics, focusing on the concept of Universalpoesie and the role of irony in both movements. It discusses the German Romantic ideal of theatre as a syncretic medium and criticizes the dogmatism of French Neo-Classical theatre. The article also examines Richard Wagner's interest in German fairy tales and his development of the concept of Gesamtkunstwerk. It highlights examples of Wagnerian irony in his operas, particularly through the use of leitmotifs, and emphasizes the importance of the spectator's critical reflection in understanding these moments.
