- Title
From Sacred Travel to Monastic Career: The Evidence of Late Antique Syriac Hagiography.
- Authors
Bitton-Ashkelony, Brouria
- Abstract
An essay is presented on sacred travel and the purpose of pilgrimage with regards to Syriac hagiography. The author states that the display of this type of Christian devotion, which was persistent in countries such as Palestine and Egypt, led to latent hostility among monastic institutions and ecclesiastical authorities. The author concludes that pilgrimage during the period of late antiquity is an essential aspect of Syriac ascetic discourse which shaped the identity of Syriac churches.
