- Title
Containing "Perversion": African Americans and Same-Sex Desire in Cold War Los Angeles.
- Authors
LEONARD, KEVIN ALLEN
- Abstract
The article looks at 20th-century African American newspapers' depictions of same-sex desire in Los Angeles, California. According to the author, newspaper coverage of homosexuality was largely negative and reflected middle-class African-American beliefs about normality, morality, and class. It is suggested that poor or otherwise unempowered members of the African American community were most frequently the subjects of this negative coverage. Topics discussed include the African American civil rights movement, historian Thaddeus Russell, sex crimes, and LGBT identities.
