- Abstract
The article discusses a research study on the effects of ageing in the somatic configurations of the Purkinje cells (PCs) in the cerebellar cortex of old cats as well as on dendritic spines and dendritic arborizations. Study subjects include 4 young adult cats aged 2-3 years and 4 old cats aged 12-13 years then rapid Golgi staining was done on blocks of tissues while Nissl staining was done on other tissue blocks. Results showed obvious differences in the dendritic aborizations of old and young cats while age-related changes in spine density of old and young cats were observed. Conclusions indicated that dendritic loss in ageing PCs are triggered by age-related loss of granule cells and declining trophic support from brain vasculature contributing to neuronal dendritic regression.
