- Abstract
The article features Jacob Frankfort as the first German Jew who arrived in December 1841 as a member of Workman-Rowland party in Los Angeles, California. Frankfort was one of the prominent local citizens who signed a resolution vowing to defend Los Angeles when it was threatened by an invasion of Americans in 1846 in the days of the Bear Flag Revolt. In addition, he was believed to be a member of the Society of California Press and working as a tailor which was the most common of all Jews occupations in the early West.
