- Abstract
The article offers information on the Mariflores Locks, Panama Canal. It notes that the canal was hand over by the U.S. to Panama on December 31, 1999 and the Panamanian government plans to create numerous improvements and modernizations to the canal. It mentions the one proposed improvements which is the installation of a hydraulic system by 2005 that is anticipated to lessen the maintenance costs. It also mentions that involvement of the Jews with the canal wherein Augustin Solomon obtained a concession from the Colombian government to develop a canal connected to Panama but he failed. Relative to this, Jewish interests in building a canal through Panama was rekindled by Ferdinand de Lesseps who successfully created the Suez Canal in 1869.
