- Authors
Ciotti, Joseph E.
- Abstract
The article looks at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, a cultural science museum and planetarium designed to help facilitate dialogue between astronomers and the Hawaiian community on issues relating to the use and ownership of the mountain Mauna Kea. According to Hawaiian tradition, the mountain is sacred and serves as an altar to the Polynesian sky god Wākea. Scientists value the mountain as a site for astronomical research. According to the author, the museum has shown some success in helping to build trust among participants in the dispute. Other topics include sovereignty, vandalism of religious sites on the mountain, and the economic impact of astronomical activity in Hawaii.
