- Abstract
The paper intends to compose in an overall synthesis the archaeological and documentary data on mining and metallurgical production in the main mining areas of the Italic kingdom (Alps, Tuscany including the island of Elba) between the 8th and 11th centuries, in order to assess the level of control and, as far as possible, the way in which this productive sector was managed by the public power. Another focus of attention will be the circulation of essential raw materials such as metals within the economic structure that was under the control of the royal authority, or through properly commercial circuits. The point of arrival is identified in the transition phase from an early medieval production system – in which the eminent role of the publicum on the exploitation of deposits were probably very binding – towards the fragmentation of production rights in the hands of multiple subjects (late 11th century).
