- Abstract
Programming aimed at children has been a tradition in radio almost since its inception, in several countries, even in Portugal. However, this reality has undergone significant changes. Before an economically less attractive audience, the commercial logic prevailed, and the offer disappeared, even in public service (Meneses, 2010). Meanwhile, the digital environment has brought new opportunities, and the emergence of children's radios on the internet has become an expanding phenomenon (Barbeito Veloso & Perona Páez, 2018). In Portugal, in the public sector, Zig Zag radio, the object of this article, emerged in 2016. Based on programming analysis and interviews with professionals involved in this project, we intend to know how a children's radio is produced and maintained and what world(s) it can provide. Based on the main pillars of public service, Zig Zag radio commits to programme diversity. Its entire programming was created from scratch by the small and multidisciplinary team that supports it in a process under the Public Service Television and Radio Concession Contract and listening to its target audience and those around it. Broadcasting 24 hours a day, although not live and on-demand, the station seeks to reconcile entertainment and education/training, giving more world to children.
