- Abstract
The article reflects on the conceptualisation, practice and social role of journalism in digital media in the countries of the Lusophony. The research offers comparative data on digital media from four continents in an area with a scarce presence in the scientific literature. Through content analysis of the founding principles of the media and their websites, in addition to a expert group the emerging strategies in the age of automation and engagement are observed. The sample consisted of one newspaper from each of the following countries: Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe and East Timor. Quality journalism is advocated as an interpreter of reality necessary for democracy and an innovative battering ram with a tendency towards constructive journalism and, to a lesser extent, ideological journalism. The fundamental role of the audience is recognized as a political actor and the purpose of journalistic work, but not as a real participant in the information production process. Engagement is linked to interaction and a massive use of social networks, instant messaging and podcasts is detected. Narrative innovations, gamification or 360° are included too.
