- Abstract
This study has the purpose of specifying José Cadalso's aesthetic position in the Spanish literature in relation to the novelty in the Noches lugubres. In this sense the presence of a new sensibility that had its roots in the sensism of Locke is first examined in Cadalso's text. There is next a focus on the anlysis of the ethical and moral aspects of the protagonist, confirming the presence of a new humanitarism, based on the idea of human equality and fraternity. The profile of Tediato emerges as an emblematic model of the “hombre de bien": the virtuous and sensitive man of the last decades of the XVIII Century. In this literary model coexist well balanced the certainties of the racionalism of the Enlightenment and the emerging new sensibility. These innovations will lay the foundations of the new sentimental language of the late Enlightenment. The Noches will be one of the earliest and best examples of the fusion of reason and emotion.
