Des systèmes d'appariement chez les Picidés: une recension bibliographique.

- Abstract
The various pairing systems for European Picidae are presented on the basis of the most exhaustive bibliographical review possible. Social monogamy appears to be the rule, largely due to the male investment in reproduction, which is equal to or even greater than that of the female in Woodpeckers. Other systems have also been observed on an often ad hoc basis: polyandry, polygyny, cooperative reproduction and egg-laying parasitism. We insist that ecological or other reasons will have led to these unusual modes. In the appendix, a list of non-European Picidae is presented with related bibliography.
