- Title
The Farmers Who Can’t Afford Farms.
- Authors
BULLINGTON, JOSEPH
- Abstract
This article discusses the challenges faced by young farmers in the United States who are unable to afford their own farmland. As older farmers retire, there is a concern that much of the farmland will be concentrated into larger farms or taken out of farming altogether. This could lead to the further economic decline of rural America and the concentration of land in the hands of white landowners. Access to land and capital is a major challenge for young farmers, particularly for farmers of color. The rising prices of farmland and competition from corporations and real estate developers make it difficult for young farmers to purchase land. The article highlights the need for community-led solutions to increase land access for underserved and beginning farmers, such as shared access to land and agrarian commons models. The National Young Farmers Coalition is advocating for the passage of the Increasing Land Access, Security, and Opportunities Act to support these initiatives. However, there is concern that funding for young farmer support programs may be delayed until the next Farm Bill, which could result in further loss of farms.
