- Abstract
Recently, in addition to governmental educational policies, extra-curricular learning programs have also been taken into account within the academic discourse, because they seem to be an important factor in students' academic achievements. This discussion seeks to differentiate between non-formal learning processes (meaning intentional, conscious learning without certification) and informal learning processes (meaning subconscious learning). To date there is a distinct lack of research as to the function, faculty and effect of learning and the acquisition of new skills by children and adolescents. One of the few methodological approaches comes from research in full-time schools. The results of this research quantify participation levels at schools but generally say little about the acquisition of skills. This paper seeks to contextualize current knowledge and the state of the academic discussion by questioning how participation in both school-based and extra-curricular educational programs affects the quality of language development.
