- Authors
Judd, Robin
- Abstract
The article presents a debate on the issue of kosher butchering in Germany from 1850 to 1890. It examines the political aspects of the issue and the demand for slaughterhouse reforms in the beef industry. It cites the political and social conditions that caused the rifts between the meat-packing industry and animal rights activists. The Kantian philosophy that the slaughter of conscious animals could affect people's behavior is examined. The debate lead to reforms that mandated strict inspection procedures, licensing of slaughterers and other regulations.
