- Abstract
We recruited eleven participants during April 2012 from the Haitian American Empowerment Program that was launched at the Diaspora Community Service (DCS) agency to meet the needs of the Haitian community in Brooklyn after the earthquake. Data were collected using open-ended questions in in-depth interviews. The key themes that emerged related to dealing with repeating memories of the earthquake; emotional and physical distress; and financial, housing, and material needs. Participants mentioned that their needs were addressed through assistance in applying for Temporary Protected Status and Medicaid, receiving medical care, and learning English. The implications of the findings are discussed.
