- Abstract
Historical witnesses seem to be self-evident components of contemporary "memory" and "history culture." The word "historical witness," however, is a neologism that can only be traced to the 1970s in the Federal Republic and was first lexicalized in the 'Unified Duden' in 1991. The term and the variants and practices of "historical witnessing" associated with it are heterogeneous and are continuously changing. They build on centuries-old cultural traditions of witnessing and emerged and have differentiated themselves since 1945 in interactions with the fields of research, justice administration, media, and pedagogy. This contribution traces the development of forms and functions of historical witnessing in the context of "coming to terms with the Nazi past" and of the "working through" and "promotion" of GDR history by combining a review of the research literature and the first results of the project 'Work with Historical Witnesses on GDR History in Continuing Education," in order to develop conclusions for oral history and work with historical witnesses. From this it is evident that the functions and forms of the "deployment of historical witnesses" have changed significantly since the 1990s due to the officialization of the "culture of remembrance" and the simultaneous media changes in the "digital age." In order to describe the multi-layered requirements and processes of work with historical witnesses appropriately, a terminological distinction between implicit and explicit historical witnessing is proposed.
