- Abstract
The article discusses the history of trade and commerce in Harbin, Manchuria, China during the early twentieth century, particularly analyzing the social impact of bazaars. It examines everyday business interactions between merchants, small traders, peddlers, and shopkeepers. The author considers processes of cultural exchange and transculturation, focusing on Chinese and Russian traders. Other topics explored include Japanese and Jewish traders, differences in trade between various quarters of Harbin, and governmental regulation of commerce.
