Ottoman Guerre de Course and the Indian Ocean Spice Trade.
- Authors
CASALE, GIANCARLO
- Abstract
The article presents information on the mid 16th century alteration of spice trade routes between India and Europe. The author discusses how during this time period trade routes through the Red Sea and Persian Gulf became active again while there was a decline in the activity along the Portuguese-controlled sea route around the Cape of Good Hope. The author examines the influence that Ottoman corsairs had on this route shift by exploring the activity of Ottoman seafarer Sefer Reis during the 1540s to 1560s.
