- Abstract
This letter published in the Egyptian Journal of Internal Medicine discusses the impact of comorbidities on COVID-19-related deaths compared to deaths from cancer or cardiovascular disease. The authors conducted a search on the Italian National Institute of Statistics website to gather data on deaths related to these three conditions in Italy from 2020 to 2021. They found that the risk of death with multiple comorbidities was much higher for COVID-19 compared to cancer or cardiovascular disease, with the risk increasing to over 130-fold for patients with six or more comorbidities. The authors suggest that enhanced prevention and more aggressive antiviral treatment may be necessary for COVID-19 patients with comorbidities.
