- Authors
HELLER, SARAH-GRACE
- Abstract
The article discusses the 12th century A.D. anonymous work of medieval French literature "Partonopeus de Blois, " focusing on its descriptions of clothing and other material goods which could be considered fashion. The romance's plot is summarized. The survival of the work in at least seven full manuscripts is attributed to its popularity during its time, when it was translated into a number of other medieval languages. The difficulty of editing the text, due to its length and differences among the surviving manuscripts is examined. The relationship between how clothing and fashion are presented as desirable consumer products for royalty, how the romance considers consumption and display as worthy attributes of its protagonists, and the ideal of promoting commerce and trade are considered as a major theme of the work.
