KOREAN TV DRAMAS AND THE JAPAN-STYLE KOREAN WAVE.
- Authors
MILLER, LAURA
- Abstract
The article discusses the success of Korean television programs in Japan. The author notes negative portrayals of female fans of Bae Yong-Joon, an actor in the Korean television program "Winter Sonata," in Japanese media but suggests the program brought cultural attention to women. She discusses how Bae's popularity reflects the Korean Wave, an increase in the popularity of Korean culture in Japan, and suggests the success of the television program "Jewel in the Palace" was due to its mixing of television genres, its glimpse of Korean history and its portrayal of women. She notes the television series "Legend," which focuses on the Kingdom of Koguryo.
