- Abstract
As Kieran Egan (2005) and Vivian Paley (2004) clearly understand, powerful themes and imagination are at the heart of young children's interests, interpersonal narratives and meaning making which they reveal to us through their dramatic play, stories and art work. Often these themes and narratives operate outside of the "official curriculum" taught in the early childhood classroom and are ignored or undervalued. In this article, three teachers inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education tell their stories about how pedagogical documentation (Dahlberg, Moss & Pence, 2007) of classroom life opened up possibilities for children's imagination and deep engagement in their learning. We will share the journeys of these teachers who, through shifting their lenses from focusing on curriculum topics to focusing on what was engaging the children, discovered that not only did they "cover the curriculum" but uncovered rich and deep learning experiences that engaged children emotionally, socially, aesthetically, as well as intellectually.
