- Abstract
"The Family Novel in Russia and England, 1800–1880" by Anna Berman is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in nineteenth-century novels. Berman argues that there are fundamental differences between English and Russian family novels, which can be attributed to the underlying structures of kinship in each national tradition. In England, the focus is on primogeniture and the perpetuation of traditions, while in Russia, family is defined more loosely and includes biological, legal, and chosen kin. Berman supports her argument with an analysis of over one hundred family novels from both countries, including works by women writers. Her book offers a new framework for understanding the family novel and challenges old assumptions in both Russian and English literary scholarship.
