KEFELI, AGNÈS
- Abstract
The article examines claims by writer and politician Fäwziyä Bäyrämova that the ark built by the Biblical figure Noah landed in a Tatar village in the Ural Mountains. According to the author, Bäyrämova views this claim as an important assertion of ethnic Islamic identity, acting in resistance to Russian modernity, secularism, and Christianity. Details on relations between Christians and Muslims in Tatarstan, Russia, are presented. Eschatology is also discussed.
