- Title
The Debate over Climate Change in the Steppe Region in Nineteenth-Century Russia.
- Authors
MOON, DAVID
- Abstract
The article discusses different views regarding changes in the climate of the Russian steppe region during the 19th century. The author discusses how droughts and the failure of crops in the region led to discussions regarding the role of human activity in climate change. He comments on the theories of scientist Vasilii Dokuchaev, which attributed crop failures to soil formation rather than climate change, and notes how scientist Aleksandr Voeikov contributed to Russian meteorology. Russian and European perceptions regarding the role of deforestation in climate change, including studies by scientist Iakov Veinberg, are also noted.
