- Abstract
The article focuses on the WritersUA Thirteenth Annual Conference that was held from March 20 to March 23, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada. WritersUA, formerly WinWriters, offers training and information to technical writers, information analysts and architects, documentation designers, help authors, and publication managers. Their focus is on user assistance, which encompasses writing, editing, planning, coding, indexing, testing, programming, localization, and standards development. The Thirteenth Annual WritersUA conference held a lot of surprises for indexers and taxonomers. The conference was of great value to indexers and taxonomists in bringing them upto- date on many software products and their impacts on taxonomy, metadata, and indexing. Microsoft products had not exposed a real index for about five years in any of their mainstream products, and had therefore trained their users not to use an index, nor to expect anything if they use the Index tab in Help. Users of MSDN (the Microsoft Developers Network, which has thousands and thousands of documents in it) used the index quite extensively.
