- Abstract
A structure-activity relationship was evident for the triterpenoid saponin compounds B 1-3 b , suggesting that the saccharide linked to the aglycone at C-28 was responsible for their inhibitory activities against AChE. Triterpenoids, phenylpropanoids, and triterpene saponins are the major bioactive compounds from the leaves of I S. hexaphylla i [[5]-[8]]. Finally, subfraction W3A was subjected to silica gel column chromatography eluted with CH SB 2 sb Cl SB 2 sb -MeOH (15:1) and purified by Sephadex LH-20 with MeOH-H SB 2 sb O (2:1) to afford compounds B 7 b (17 mg) and B 8 b (28 mg). Based on the potential AChE inhibition of the isolated compounds, the results demonstrated that the fruit of I S. hexaphylla i or its constituent saponins may be useful as a daily food to treat Alzheimer's disease.
