- Abstract
This document is an abstract from the ANZ Journal of Surgery, focusing on indigenous health in New Zealand. The first study examines the ethnic disparity in prostate cancer assessment and management between Māori and non-Māori populations. The study found that Māori were more likely to receive certain types of biopsies and treatments, but less likely to receive surgery. The second study explores inequities in postoperative mortality for Māori following gastrointestinal cancer surgery. It found that Māori had higher mortality rates and failure to rescue rates compared to non-Māori. The third study investigates Māori next of kin responses to the treatment of glioblastoma in the elderly. Overall, Māori families were satisfied with the information provided for consent and would recommend surgery, but expressed dissatisfaction with postoperative function.
