- Abstract
Background. Herbal ingredients or substances used in food supplements or as such may cause dermatological side effects and inhibit the enzymes CYP2C9, CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 and may influence the clearance of dermatological drugs. The objective of this paper was to identify the dermatological side effects caused by food supplements or food ingredients, in order to legislate and implement nutrivigilance. Aims. This paper aims to identify the dermatological side effects caused by food supplements or food ingredients, in order to legislate and implement nutrivigilance in Romania. Methods. PubMed, ResearchGate, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center – were databases evaluated for 2016-2021 regarding Herbs, Botanicals & Other Products. Plant and chemical resources that can cause dermatological side effects and interact with enzymes that metabolize drugs used in dermatological therapy have been identified. Results. Herbal resources such as Aloe vera and others, can cause dermatological side effects that may inhibit clearance or CYP dermatological drugs (eg terbinafine). Another studied enzyme with a role in the metabolism of dermatological drugs and which is inhibited by plant resources was also CYP2C19. Conclusions. In order to increase the quality of life of healthy or sick patients, and reduce the costs of the health system, it is important to legislate nutrivigilance for the food and food supplements industry, nutritionists and dietitians, and health professionals.
