- Abstract
The literary motif of the female figure transformation has an extensive trajectory and dates back to the Pygmalion myth, collected in the Metamorphosis by Ovid. In the Greek tale, a statue (Galatea) created by Pygmalion becomes a real woman thanks to the intervention of the Goddess Venus. Regarding folk literature, a similar mutation is found in Cinderella, who suffers from a physical transformation because of the magical powers of her fairy godmother. Pygmalion and La Salvatge are two contemporary rereadings of the Pygmalion myth that gather, as well, some elements from «Cinderella»; this article focuses in the comparison of Cinderella's character with the protagonists of these two works related to the Pygmalion myth: Eliza, from Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw (1916), and Dolores Mendoza, from La Salvatge by Isabel-Clara Simó (1993). The two contemporary protagonists mutate when being manipulated by their respective pygmalions who, in this case, are both mortal men and do not have any supernatural powers. The study tries to analyze, from a gender perspective, the treatment of the female figures by paying attention to the parallelisms and differences found in the works analyzed. In this way, results try to prove the continuity of classical myths and folk culture in the contemporary narrations.
