- Abstract
Considering the need for clinical experience, the expansion of pain management fellowships appears to be another item of paramount importance. The experience developed during a pain medicine fellowship is vitally important for the development of clinical skill, and thus clinical competency. Although several pain medicine fellowships have begun to appear in the last few decades, more are required. At the very least, an integration of end-of-life and pain management training with standard clinical residencies is indicated. Pain assessment and skills should not be the singular domain of an anesthesiologist; as stated earlier, participation from physicians in other disciplines is valuable as well.
