- Abstract
Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) and politician Pedro Aguirre Cerda (1879-1941) first met in 1916. Afterward they maintained a correspondence until 1941. This article is based on a set of 27 letters written by Mistral to Aguirre Cerda from different places in the world, published in the journal 'Mapocho' in 1977. Also assessed are letters included in the 'Epistolario de Pedro Aguirre Cerda' (1938-41), a letter by Juana Aguirre de Aguirre to Mistral dated 1942, and various references to each other that both Mistral and Aguirre Cerda made in their letters to other people. The focus is on four aspects of Mistral's life: daily life; professional matters, especially in connection with her work as an educator, as an international government employee, and as a publicist of Chile abroad; her opinions concerning Chilean politics; and Mistral's private life and personal opinions.
