- Abstract
The article examines historical events that inspired the short story "Absalom of Moulting Pelican," by Owen Wister. The story, about a missionary's attempts to prove the Apaches are a lost tribe of Israel, depicts the boredom of Arizona military life after the defeat of Geronimo. Army captain John G. Bourke may have taught an Indian to speak in a Yiddish dialect. Wister may have been inspired by suggestions from author Rudyard Kipling. The use of hashish in the story was inspired by true events.
