- Title
Talking About “Doing” Family.
- Authors
Hertz, Rosanna
- Abstract
The article offers comments on the idea of "doing" family and the process in which single white mothers create families. Many single mothers crave having a traditional family and strive to create an image of one despite having split up the nuclear family. Often, a single mother will save a space for her children's biological father, sometimes using the grandmother as a substitute or a placeholder for those absent from the family. Nevertheless, a grandmother is not given full rights in deciding how to raise her grandchildren and is expected to relinquish her place once a father figure enters the picture.
