Pipe Dream: The Wild Nantahala.
- Authors
Thurmond, Gerald
- Abstract
The article focuses on the author's experience on the banks of the Nantahala River in the North Carolina mountains. The Nantahala River is located in the Nantahala National Forest in Western North Carolina. Because the water is released from a deep lake it is very cold, averaging between forty-five and fifty degrees even in summer. The river runs through a gorge, which makes the surroundings spectacular if you can ignore the road that runs beside the river. It is almost eight miles from the put in to the take out below the Nantahala Falls. After that the Nantahala tumbles over Wesser Falls, a dangerous stretch of water made turbulent by jagged, dynamited ledges. Finally the river is submerged under the Fontana Reservoir.
