- Abstract
This article explores the challenges faced by academic libraries in providing equal access to textbooks, especially with the rising costs and restrictions on e-textbook access. The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the need for a proactive approach to textbook provision, focusing on open educational resources. A research project conducted by the University of Canterbury found that academics are often unaware of the difficulties libraries face in providing textbook access. To ensure equity, libraries should collaborate with academics on adopting and creating open textbooks. The article emphasizes the importance of communication between libraries and academics, raising awareness of open textbooks as a more affordable and equitable option. The University of Canterbury Library has taken steps to educate and advocate for open textbooks, including developing a statement on textbooks and establishing an Open Education Librarian role. The broader academic library sector in Australasia is also making progress in supporting open textbook publishing through initiatives like the CAUL Open Educational Resources Collective. The article concludes by highlighting the role of libraries in advocating for equal textbook access and supporting the adoption, adaptation, and creation of open textbooks.
